Youth support YWCA Dayton through innovative grant

Youth served by GLAD House led a project and chose to YWCA Dayton as a grant recipient.

Students around the region showed their support for YWCA Dayton's programs and services when they voted to give over $2,000 for our services and programs.

The students were working with Cincinnati-based Magnified Giving, a nonprofit aimed at educating, inspiring, and engaging students in lifelong philanthropy. Magnified Giving grants groups of students grants and invites the students to decide where to invest the money in the local nonprofit community. The students were charged with researching area nonprofits, choosing one whose mission matched their personal passions, and then presenting the project for a vote to chose the winning projects.YWCA Dayton is honored to be chosen as a recipient of a Magnified Giving award for the second year in a row, thanks to the efforts of two groups of young people. One of those groups were clients with the nonprofit GLAD House in Cincinnati, which is a certified mental health and alcohol and drug prevention agency that works with youth who have been impacted emotionally and behaviorally by a family member with an addiction.Michelle Cox, GLAD House executive director, said the kids age 10 to 13 worked with group leaders who helped them consider different nonprofits in the area. Six kids presented on a nonprofit of their choice to all of GLAD House and and the younger kids got to watch the older kids present.Cox said it was great for the kids to have this experience and for them to feel important enough to decide where the money should go."It’s a huge thing for our kids to be able to have that responsibility,” Cox said. She said the pitch to donate to YWCA Dayton, which was one of two organizations selected by the group, was presented by someone who has just aged out of their program and he shared about his personal experience with domestic violence."GLAD House is a safe place to people who get up and be vulnerable," she said. They also voted to award a grant to Ohio Justice & Policy Center.Students with Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati researched YWCA Dayton and presented our organization with a grant as part of a philanthropy project where students chose recipients. Additionally, The Summit Country Day School, a Catholic school in Cincinnati, awarded YWCA Dayton $1,000 through the Magnified Giving program.A group of boys from their high school researched YWCA Dayton and made their case to their religion class for voting. They cited girls and women's empowerment as part of the reason that they selected YWCA Dayton to research and promote the organization to their classmates.YWCA Dayton was chosen alongside Ohio Innocence Project at UC Law.

Nadia Oehler, YWCA Dayton's Associate Director, Compliance, said Magnified Giving helps students like the ones at Summit Country Day School and GLAD House learn about the power of philanthropy.

“We hope students see they have the power to spark change and that they continue to that passion into adulthood,” Oehler said.
