Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Andrey

Name: Andrey SyrnevVolunteer Position:Meal ServerStarted Volunteering: 2018What do you think other people should know about YWCA Dayton? I feel like it’s not an organization many males might consider, and that’s what stood out to me. I wanted to challenge that stigma and hopefully set an example. When your friends/family find out that you volunteer with YW, what do they say or ask? I haven’t really been too vocal about it. I was even reluctant to do this spotlight. Current events have been a wake-up call for many, and I hope that people consider this or any other organization to help drive positive changes forward. I sometimes bring it up in conversation, and some of my friends have shown interest in volunteering. What would you say to someone considering volunteering with us? Do it! It doesn’t matter whether it’s a few times a month or a few times a week. It’s welcome, and in this day and age, supporting an organization that has such a strong foundation behind it is a great medium to promote a cause that matters to you. I enjoy the people I work with and the encouragement I get to continue coming back. I certainly didn’t think that I would be here as long as I have, but the environment and the positive drive has kept me involved. How has this volunteer experience changed you? When I first started, I was a little nervous -- and sometimes I still am -- but less so than before. I haven’t really done much volunteering, as I was mostly focused on school and work when I first moved here, but this has allowed me to become more involved in the Dayton community and meet incredible people! What do you do when you aren't volunteering? I’m currently in grad school, working, and entertaining three dogs, so there’s always something. I like to spend time with friends as well as travel and discover new places. This year has been interesting, to say the least, but I’m very happy I get to spend it with the people that I know. What might (someone) be surprised to know about you? I speak two languages and have two passports.Learn more about volunteer opportunities at YWCA Dayton at www.ywcadayton.org/volunteer.
